Blogger and organic eater Ginger at the Girls Just Wanna Have Funds blog has been complaining about the rises in grocery prices over the last year - in fact, she says that between January and September this year, her grocery bill more than doubled.

Grocery prices certainly do seem to have risen, but others suggest that the rises are relatively small for staple items and higher for pre-prepared foods and packaged items. Additionally, special categories like organic foods have also seen large price rises. In the case of the pre-prepared foods it is suggested that extra transport and packaging are what makes them more expensive.

Ginger has decided on a sensible strategy to tackle the rising grocery bill problem, and her first step is to make a list of the staple items and ensure that they total up to be under her budget. Another important part of her strategy is to try using up everything in the pantry before heading off to the supermarket again. Rather than eating something that you especially crave but have to go and buy, she suggests, it is probably worth eating up what’s in the pantry first before adding more groceries to the monthly bill.
