If you’re a seasoned antiques bargain hunter or just looking to score beautiful furniture at a great deal, antique sales are one of the furniture market’s best kept secrets.

Estate sales can be held for any number of reasons, including death, downsizing, or moving, but they always mean great deals. Usually, a liquidation firm purchase the entire estate at a deep discount, and then sells it off piecemeal for more than they paid, but far less than market value of the individual good.

To find estate sales near you, check the newspaper and local classified for “estate sales” or “estate liquidations.” Search online at sites like EstateSales.net, and ask around - word of mouth sometimes leads to the best sales. Keep in mind that searching in wealthy and historic areas will often yield you better goods.

After you’ve locate a sale, make sure to view the goods in advance. Previews are usually held the night before the sale, so ask to put your name on the list, and head over to pick out what you’d like. The next day, get to the sale early or late: early, and you’ll have a chance at everything you want, and late on the first day for the best deals.
