For first home buyers, looking for the house you want to buy can be very exciting and also quite daunting. But to keep yourself on track and avoid getting into too much debt, here are four questions to ask yourself before you begin house-hunting:
- How much are you able to borrow? Consult a finance professional or talk to your bank to find out the maximum amount you’ll be able to borrow, and how much deposit will be best.
- How much do you want to borrow? You might be eligible to borrow more than you feel comfortable with. Do your calculations to be sure you’ll still be able to enjoy life while you’re paying your mortgage, and take into account future changes – for example, having children or a planned career break to study.
- Will your future lifestyle change? Consider this not just in a financial regard – will you need more space or less space in the future? Do you want to take care of a large house and garden, or do you want a flat you can lock up and leave?
- Do you need your dream house first? Your first house is unlikely to be the only house you buy during your lifetime. You might have high expectations for it, but be realistic and remember that having a first step in the market is also a good thing. You can upgrade later to your dream house.
