Technology That Saves More Than It Costs

coins_graphIf you’re trying to remain frugal in this tough economy, here’s a bit of news: Not spending some money could cost you in the long run. It seems contrary to the idea that “a penny saved is a penny earned,” but it’s actually true in some cases. Take for instance, technology. There are a number of technologies out there that can save you more than they cost to implement. Would you rather stay in the Dark Ages for the virtue of being a saver, or would you rather have a modern lifestyle that is penny wise too? It’s no contest! Everyone wants to maintain their lifestyle, even with a bad economy, it’s just they may not know exactly how to do that without having or opening a swiss bank account.

Reduce Your Yearly Costs On Utilities

One of the biggest expenditures in anyone’s modern budget is energy. Whether it’s the gas you pump into your car, the oil or gas that fuels your furnace, or the electricity that powers your appliances, it’s going to cost you. It is a basic, recurring, monthly expense that can add up to hundreds each month. It also is dependent on where you live, with warmer areas having more cooling costs in summer and colder areas experiencing high utility bills in winter.

If you can’t avoid cooling and heating costs, you should take a look at updating your equipment. Many gains in technology have made these much more energy efficient, that literally cost less to operate than older models, especially with the tax incentives provided under the stimulus plan. A higher efficiency furnace or air conditioner might take several years or more to recoup the cost of the initial investment, even with a higher efficiency, and this is a technology savings. However, the initial cost to implement higher energy efficient machines, which was significantly higher than older models, might have soured some people on it. Now, there’s no excuse. Many states, combined with the Federal government incentive programs, are offering 30% tax incentives off the cost of updating a major energy system. Add to that the understanding that energy prices will most certainly go up as resources start to dwindle, and it’s really a great way to save money and become more self-sufficient at the same time.

Really Understand Your Needs Before Buying

Every demographic has different needs. Cost savings for students might include purchasing a Kindle, if they find that downloading textbooks on it far offsets the cost of acquisition. Homeowners might be more interested in water saving devices like low flow toilets or shower heads. Business owners might want to investigate open source software to standardize on, instead of more proprietary and costly systems. If you are already making an expense on something, think how a little investment in technology might help you to drop the cost of ownership by paying you back in long term savings. Once you start to realize that spending can save you money in some cases, it will become more important to learn how to wisely evaluate new systems for savings, instead of just clamping your pocketbook shut because you want to save money in the short run.
