It doesn’t matter what the economy looks like, as Benjamin Franklin famously believed, a penny saved is a penny earned. And when it comes to our utility bills, there really is something we can do to save a bit every month.

With the rising price of oil and gas, we all feel the pressure opening each month’s new bill. But just like cutting out premium channel on our cable or ordering a slower internet speed, there are things we can do to lessen our energy load. Begin by realizing that prices may still get worse, so cutting down now is the best way to prepare for the future.

If you own your home, check out your insulation and, if needed, replace it with better, more energy-efficient insulation. A few dollars now could save you much more in the future. Second, if you’re having trouble paying your gas or oil bill, call your utility company and ask to work out a payment plan. Believe it or not, the utility company understands that these are harder times, and they may be willing to help you out.

Lastly, remember to keep your car well-maintained. Fuel economy has a lot to do with how full your tires are, if you’re using the recommended oil, and whether your engine is tuned. Do proper maintenance, and you will have to fill up less often, helping you save on your monthly expenses.
