Global warming, eco-products, and Earth Day are familiar to all of us, but many times, we don’t know where to start. But the truth is, we can each start small — very small — and make a dent in our own gas and energy bills at the same time.

  1. Check you water heater settings: By adjusting you water heater thermostat just 25 degrees — from 145 down to 120 — you likely won’t feel the difference, but your bills will: expect to save $20/year if you heat with gas, and $50 if with water.
  2. Lighten up on your lead foot: Driving at 55 mph instead of 65 mph can save you 15% on gas, and reduce your car’s emissions by quite a bit. In addition, keep your tires inflated to ideal pressure, and don’t start and start too quickly.
  3. Plan your stops: By planning out your errands, you can minimize the number of trips you take, and hit all stops close to each other at once. You’ll not only save time, but gas, as well.
  4. Place your appliances wisely: Don’t put a refrigerator or freezer in direct sunlight or next to warm appliances, like the stove or dishwasher. And if you have an extra fridge that’s used to just keep drinks cool, unplug it.
