Does the idea of afternoon picnics, barefoot walks through the park, museum visits, lazy mornings spent in bed, and refreshing swimming fit the bill for your next family vacation? But does the thought of how much it’ll cost make you want to run and hide? If so, reconsider your vacation plans, and take a “staycation,” a vacation where you stay at home.

Live there, you may not fully appreciate the place that you call home. But think about why people come to your area: do you have beautiful summer weather, a wealth of cultural attractions, swimmable waters, or even a healthy combination of all three? Chances are, you can find many vacation activities within an hour of your home, most of them unexplored by your family.

Planning a staycation saves a lot of money — airfare, rental cars, hotels — and opens you up to a whole new world of possibility. Take into consideration that a 10-day vacation for a family of four can easily cost $10,000, and staycations are feeling more and more like the way to go. Add to the equation the comfort of being on your home turf, and you have a recipe for an enjoyable, affordable vacation that the whole family can enjoy.
