Save Money by Downsizing Your Hobbies

Normally this kind of advice would go against the grain for me - if you’ve got a hobby you enjoy, I’d say you should stick with it, because life is about enjoying your time. However, the advice from the No Credit Needed blog about giving up hobbies while you’re trying to get out of debt does sound like a good suggestion.

The idea is that if you make a sacrifice now and give up one or more of your hobbies while you are attempting to become debt free, then in the future when you can comfortably afford it, you will enjoy it even more. For example, giving up a relatively expensive hobby like golf seems like a good idea. In other cases, though, you can find ways to make your hobby cheaper.

Some suggestions: If you’re a big reader or movie watcher, then join the local library to borrow books or find the cheapest ways to rent DVDs and give up going to the cinema to see new releases. Alternatively, take up a cheaper or free hobby, or find a hobby that makes a little money - one suggestion was to get weekend work as a sports referee so you can be involved with a sport you love and also pick up a bit of extra cash.
