Save Money on Your Daily Commute

Of course, you have to spend money on getting to and from work, or you won’t end up earning your income, right? That’s true, but there are many ways that you can try to reduce this necessary expense. Here are a few tips:
- Consider the distance to work when choosing an apartment or house.
- Investigate the possibilities of using public transport when choosing a place to live.
- If you have to drive, share the ride with a colleague, or advertise for a ride share on the internet.
- Research the cheapest way: compare gas costs (and all the other costs of running a car) to various alternatives, including public transport.
- Try to telecommute and work from home, even if it is just one day per week. If this is possible for your job, you’ll quickly save one fifth of your commuting costs.
- Adjust your working hours so you can commute in off-peak hours, rather than spending a long time with your car idling on slow-moving roads.
- Check if your employer has any pretax transport perks, for example, providing bus or train transit passes with pre-tax income.
- For drivers, be sure to maintain your car because correct air pressure and the right fluid top-ups can decrease your gas consumption dramatically.
