It seems that for travelers these days, getting the cheapest flight is only half the battle. As well as paying as little as possible, we’d also like to be fairly sure our airline will still be flying when our trip comes around, we want our luggage to come out the other end and we don’t want to have a horribly uncomfortable flight. Some recent Yahoo tips on dealing with airlines in the current environment had some useful pointers, including:
- Book directly through the airline. Find the cheapest fare using a comparison website but once you’ve decided, go straight to the source. Apparently they’ll be more likely to help you, as a direct customer, if things go wrong later.
- Pack as light as possible. Especially with some airlines charging fees for checked baggage, try to cut down your packing as much as possible. This can save you money as well as minimizing delays and losses.
- Fly early or late. Flights during the off peak periods of early morning or very late at night, they say, are pretty much the only flights with a chance of having a lighter passenger load – which means a better trip for you. Having said that, booking for the last flight of the day can leave you stranded if it happens to be canceled, so take that into consideration too.
