Keep Your Commute Costs Down

It doesn’t matter if you travel in a gas-guzzling SUV or tiny hatchback, your daily commute is getting more expensive. But there are several things you can do to cut the cost of your commute:

  • Do you have access to public transit?: The average commuter spends $200 per month, or $2,400 per year on their commute. That’s the equivalent of a $3,500 raise! If you have access, taking public transit will drastically cut down on your commuting costs and give you a little extra time to read the newspaper or a book.
  • Get more miles per gallon: Maintaining your car will keep it fuel efficient, and keeping your tires properly inflated also will help keep you efficient.
  • Ask your employer for help: If your employer offers a flexible spending plan for transportation, take part - all contributed funds will cound as tax deductions.
  • Carpool: Sharing expenses can be your best bet, and there are many free services designed to help you find fellow carpoolers near you.
  • Keep your insurance company up-to-date: If you drive less, let your insurer know, and take advantage of their low-mileage discount.
