Even if you’re pinching pennies, buying a gas-friendly vehicle is still within your grasp: think used. Reaping all the benefits at a fraction of the cost, a used car that doesn’t guzzle gas is a great option on a budget. Of course, it’s important to buy a good used car, and for that reason, Consumer Reports compiled a list of the best used fuel sippers:
- 2001-2003 Toyota Prius: The most-popular hybrid car on the market, the Prius is fuel efficient, attractive, and a great bargain. Just $6,700-$13,000 will buy you a 41-mpg Prius with style and durability to spare.
- 2000-2005 Toyota Echo: As the predecessor to the popular Yaris, the small Echo delivers a huge bang for your buck: $3,250-$10,000 will afford you 38 mpg and a stylish package, to boot.
- 1998 Mazda Progege LX: At just $1,690-$4,000, the Protege is well worth its 32 mpg score and good repair reputation. Though 10 years old, it’s a reliable and very affordable budget find.
- 2005-2006 Scion xB: If you’re looking to make a statement, the boxy xB will do the trick. Clocking in at 32 mpg and $8,250-$14,000, the newer car offers a good value and drivability, though it’s most suited for city driving and commutes.
- 2006 Mini Cooper (manual): A true fashion statement, the Mini Cooper is also a great economical car, costing between $16,500-$24,750 for a 2-year old. Luckily, its 30 mpg help pad the up-front cost, and its retro-cool factor will win you road points amongst your peers.
