Apart from airfare, the costs of your hotel or other accommodations are likely to be the biggest budget items when you take a vacation. Obviously, you want to have as much cash left to spare to enjoy activities on your vacation as you can, so here are some tips to save some money on accommodations while still having a decent place to sleep each night.
- Do your research: Lots of websites guarantee “lowest internet rates” when you’re booking a hotel. Don’t believe them without looking around first. Try to book directly through your hotel website – this is sometimes substantially cheaper, yet sometimes more expensive. Get your facts before you make a reservation.
- Don’t be afraid to try a youth hostel: These days, youth hostels are not just for 19-year-old backpackers. A lot of hostels now offer private double rooms with bathrooms, for a much more reasonable price than a hotel.
- Choose an off-peak season: If you’re flexible, avoid peak periods and your accommodation bill might drop dramatically.
- Avoid the middle of town: Particularly if you’re traveling by car, you don’t need to stay in a hotel in the heart of the city. Find some accommodations more on the outskirts of town and you’ll often pay a lot less.
