With a bad economy more and more people are finding money to be very tight. Does this sound like your situation? If so, you may be overlooking one simple step to earning more: ask for a raise. Now may not seem like the best time to ask for more money, but remember this: you will never know until you ask.

Of course, you don’t want to ask for a raise without thinking about what you are doing. It is very important that you are respectful while doing so, and that you also back up your request with claims of good performance and promises of future success. In other words, schedule a meeting with your boss and explain why you think you deserve a raise.

Remember, asking for a raise may start out as a one-sided conversation but it probably won’t end this way. Soon enough your boss will begin to ask questions and you need to be prepared. How much of a raise do you want? Why do you think you deserve more money? Are you willing to do more work in order to earn more? If you have answers for any questions that come your way you will be in a better position to get what you want.

If you need more money you should ask your employer for a raise. The worst that can happen is you are told no. If this happens you are in the same place money-wise, but at least you tried to better your situation. Who knows, you may get just what you ask for!
