The Importance of Part Time Jobs

With the price of living going up and more companies going out of business, many families have deemed it necessary to take on part time jobs along with their full time jobs in order to help make ends meet. This may be because of the company a loved one worked for going over, or simply because now more than ever people are seeing the importance of being able to set a little something aside in a savings account just in case something happens to them. Even when prices and the economy aren’t much of a concern, many people are still pulling down full time and part time jobs for a variety of reasons.

Some people have taken the current job situation as inspiration to further their education, but find that college is too expensive for just their current full time job. In this case, there are a couple of ways that part time jobs may help. Sometimes, a person may take on a secondary job for a shorter period of time, such as over the summer, in order to save up enough to cover the fees for a technical college. Other times, such as in the case of a couple, you may see one person pulling down a full time and a part time job, while the other goes to school full time and gets part time jobs in order to help supplement the household’s overall income. When this happens, the part time jobs are typically dropped by both once one person graduates from college, and both go back to having a full time job.

Part time jobs may not have the benefits that full time jobs have, but for many they offer the perfect solution to getting out of a financial pinch. If a sudden expense comes up, such as an expensive car repair or medical bills, an extra source of income may be needed but only until that particular expense is repaid. Once the debt is settled, the extra income may not be needed and the part time job can be dropped. Some people find that they enjoy having the extra money on hand, and keep their part time jobs for a bit longer in order to set something aside.

Part time jobs also provide a good solution for those that were a stay at home parent at one point in time. With a part time job, the parent can work during the hours that their child or children are at school, and be off work when they need to pick the child up. This allows the parent to bring more money into the household, and still doesn’t interrupt their daily life or time with their children. Not only does holding a part time job in this situation bring in more money, but it also keeps the family from having to spend more on daycare fees or a babysitter.

Many companies have begun to cut back on the number of full time jobs they offer and have lowered the hours of their workers until they’re eventually working the hours you’d expect from part time jobs. They do this in an attempt to keep their company afloat, but this in turn leads to the family needing to find another source of work in order to pay for their household necessities. This, in turn, causes them to look for more part time work.

Of course, part time jobs aren’t only for adults. Many teenagers have part time jobs scheduled outside of their hours in school. While some just use this as a way to put a little money in their pockets, more and more are turning to getting a part time job in order to help their family out during hard times. Unfortunately, because of the aforementioned facts, it’s becoming harder and harder for teenagers to be able to acquire part time work.

For all of these reasons and more, the number of part time jobs is on the rise. Since April of 2006, more than 2 million people have taken on part time jobs, either by themselves or in addition to their current employment. Some take them on just to have a little extra money on hand, but most have found that they’ve become a necessary supplement to their current income.
