Everyone with investments has been feeling the heat, their stomachs sinking each time the Dow dips another hundred points. But instead of double-guessing your investment decisions and diving into panic mode, Money Magazine recommends that you focus on your long term goals in relation to your investments.

Most of our goals are not just money-related, but having to do with lifestyle. Yes, we want to have enough to comfortably retire, but most investors think about all the travel they’ll do, the people they’ll help, and the freedom that retirement will give them. Along the way, make sure you’re satisfying today’s goals, like spending enough time with your family and working out an investment plan that is recession-proof. And the bottom line is that, even in today’s economy, if you look at the big picture, you’ll achieve your goals if you’re only willing to stick to the plan when the going gets rough.

Instead of investment planning, take a new approach to your portfolio, and engage in life planning. Think about what you need to be satisfied with life, and map out the path to that satisfaction. There are many financial advisers in the country that understand this approach are are willing to help you not only stack your portfolio well, but determine how to make your dreams come true.

On the long road to a happy life and comfortable retirement, there will be ups and downs, but always keep in mind that your diversified investments will pay off in the end. After all, it’s not just about money, it’s about achieving what you’ve always dreamed.
