It’s easy to take your home and its contents for granted - it’s there when you wake up and there when you get home at night. And the home insurance is just another bill that you pay every year with thinking too much about it. But that can sure lead to problems, which is why checking these tips could save you a whole lot of hassle:

  1. Check the policy to see whether it covers you for replacement value or actual worth. If it’s only covering your belongings for today’s value, this is not enough to replace electronic goods and other items that depreciate over the years. Figure out if that’s a risk you’re prepared to take or not.
  2. Keep records of the value of your home’s contents and a full inventory of what you own. That can help you calculate how much coverage you need, and will also be extremely helpful in the event that you need to make a claim.
  3. Read the policy carefully, or ask the insurance company directly, to be sure that what you own is actually covered. For example, the regular policy might have a dollar limit for photographic equipment or artwork, but if you specify to the company that you own more, the true value of your belongings can be covered. Also check if your policy includes events like flooding - many don’t - and if your home is at risk, buy the additional policy.
  4. Don’t forget about inflation - the cost of replacing your house if it was destroyed is always increasing. Check that your policy either takes this into account appropriately, or increase the value specified in your policy.
