Owning an electric car is not a dream of the future, but rather a goal you achieve right now. Check out the following five electric cars currently on the market:

  • Tesla Roadster: Achieving 125 miles per hour, taking just 3.5 hours to charge, and running for 220 miles without a recharge, this super sporty electric car is well worth its $109,000 price tag. Who knew that treehugging could look so sexy?
  • GEM Car: Costing just $7,000-$13,000, this snazzy little car is small, lightweight, and rumbles on at a maximum 25 mph. The little car pack a big punch though, and its designation as a LSV (Low Speed Vehicle) allows it special considerations. Be warned that they are only legal on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.
  • Dynasty iT Sedan: Another LSV, this 4-door electric is currently undergoing production changes, moving from Canada to its new warehouse in Pakistan. When the dust settles, however, look for this vehicle to become much ore accessible, coming in at an affordable $14,000-$25,000.
  • Zap Xebra: This quirky 3-wheeler qualifies as a motorcycle, allowing it a max speed faster than that of its LSV counterparts. At just $11,700, this 40 mph workhorse will take you about 25 miles on a single charge.
  • ZENN: Short for Zero Emissions, No Noise, this LSV has a maximum speed of 25 mph, and will run 30-50 miles on a single charge. According to the company, the car is as efficient as a 245 mpg gasoline-powered car.
