Living in today’s world, where men and women are equals in both the workplace an home, can sometimes bring up questions about yesterday’s customs. For anyone who has been on a date recently, you’re already familiar with the big one: who pays for dinner?

Together, Elle and msnbc.com surveyed over 74,000 online readers on the question of who pays, and the results were clear: most men would like women to help out after the first few dates. Of course, this is sticky ground and many women are adamant about their part - either they want to pay their share always, or prefer the vintage style of handling the check.

Statistically, almost 66% of the surveyed men would like women to help pay after the first few dates, but about 44% of women said that they would be upset if a man expected them to chip in. And though 57% of women (disproportionately the younger ones) always offer to help pay the check, 34% are bothered by his acceptance and 46% by his refusal.

What it comes down to, though, is the dynamic of the two people dating. It may be hard to feel out on a first date, but everyone has their own dating style, including who they think should pick up the check. My advice? Don’t offer to pay if you don’t actually want to, and if neither of you want to pay, the burden falls — at least this once — on the person who initiated the evening.
