Explaining Economics to Your Kids

Sometimes we forget that kids might hear all this horrifying news about the economic crisis - and listen to what the adults around them are saying too - but not really get what’s going on. Rather than get them feeling worried or scared, Yahoo suggests, parents should remember to chat to their kids about the economic crisis and make sure they understand the gist of things without feeling too anxious.

It’s especially important to talk about the economic downturn optimistically - it’s good for you as well as your kids! For example, rather than saying that you’re going broke and you can’t afford to buy anything, turn it around to a more temporary situation and explain to the kids that at this point in time, the family needs to make some different choices with the budget and that we’re working towards paying off debts or finding better-paid work or something else that’s positive on the horizon.

It also helps to help kids realize that although they might compare their family’s economic situation with a wealthier friend who lives in a nicer house and has more new clothes or the latest games, you could also compare it with families who have medical problems, a poorer education and chances to get a job or who aren’t able to carefully make different budget choices and get back on the right track.
