If you’re graduating from college soon, or are trying to decide what to study there, then the recent figures on current starting salaries for new graduates in a variety of fields might be very interesting for you.
Some of the areas that are hunting most keenly for graduate employees include engineering services, accounting firms, consulting companies, retail services and petroleum companies, and since they’re looking for quite a few people, they’ve had to make the starting salaries attractive. For example, the average salary for new engineers is up 5.7% to $56, 336. The highest average starting salary is for computer science graduates with $56,921, and a number of other areas have starting salaries over $50,000: economics, nursing and chemistry graduates included.
But not everybody wants to be an engineer or a nurse. You might be interested to know that a liberal arts graduate, on average, will get paid $33,258 a year on graduation, a little bit more than a journalist ($32,250). If you study human resources, the demand is reasonable and so is the starting salary at $40,250. Choosing a career based on starting salary alone probably won’t set you up for a satisfying time, but it does pay to take a realistic look at what you can earn.
