If you’re swimming in a sea of debt and you can’t see the shore, now is the time to look for help. In fact, the answer is always “now,” because the sooner you take control of debt, the faster you will take control of it.

  • Help yourself: Pick up a few self-help books on handling debt, and set aside a few hours to read and plan how you’re going to tackle your personal debt situation.
  • Start with Debtors Anonymous: Before hiring someone to help you, check out Debtors Anonymous, which offers free resources to help you claw your way out of debt.
  • Don’t listen to TV commercials: Most credit-repair companies you see on TV are selling hope, but they may end up charging you thousands of dollars for a couple pennies worth of advice. Don’t fall for them.
  • Check out non-profit credit-counseling: If you need outside help, a reputable non-profit credit-counseling agency is the way to go. You can view their credentials and talk to previous clients before you commit, and these agencies are held to higher ethical standards through various associations.
  • Tread carefully: After checking out several agencies and picking your favorite, make sure to outline in writing exactly what your credit counseling includes and what is expected of your counselor and of you.
