Fuel Up For Less

With rising oil prices and a long commute, chances are you dream of the days when you thought that $1.50 gas was too expensive. But times have changed, and so have gas prices, so Money Magazine has brought you several tips on how to fuel up for less:

  • Sign up for price alerts: Several companies will send text messages to your cell phone, letting you know where the lowest gas prices in your area are. The companies will also text you when prices go lower.
  • Shop online: Several websites exist to help you find the cheapest gas in your area, mapping their locations in relation to your zip code. You may be surprised, but the difference between expensive gas and cheap gas can be as much as $0.40/gallon, which amounts to $8 on one 20-gallon tank!
  • Buy in bulk: No, you can’t buy your gas in bulk, but if you head to big bulk stores, like Costco or Sam’s Club, you may find that they have very low gas prices. Many times, these low prices are designed to lure you into the store, but there are no official strings attached to the low gas prices.
  • Consider buying on credit: There are several credit cards that will give you up to 5% cash back on all gas-station purchases, with no restrictions or caps.
