Creative Commons License credit: b_d_solisAmerica is beginning to feel a financial crunch, and many families are looking for creative ways to rework their already-tight budgets and make a dollar stretch a little farther. Indeed, if drastic times call for drastic measures, we’re getting out our measuring tapes to draw up new lifestyle plans. One such change: we’re moving. Cost of living can vary greatly depending on city and state, especially in the cost of housing, so now might be just the time to make that big move.

CoolTownStudios has done the research and come up with what they consider the cities with the best value. Topping the list are Nashville, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Albuquerque. Similarly, Kiplinger has profiled the 50 smartest places to live, weighing the fun factor, economy, and affordability of each city to determine its overall value. Topping their 2006 list are the same: Nashville, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Albuquerque.

Nashville ranks highly thanks to its affordable housing, pleasant climate, and spectacular entertainment choices. Minneapolis-St. Paul comes in a close second due to a cool urban atmosphere, rich cultural offerings, sporting events, and overall affordability of these conveniences. Rounding out the top 3 is Albuquerque, with resort-like atmosphere, vibrant economy, and incredibly affordable prices.

These three towns may not top your list of new home locations, but that doesn’t stop you from weighing your current cost of living with that of your potential future one. Check out Sperling’s BestPlaces cost of living calculator, and figure out how a move could save your family.
